Anna’s Thoughts

Christmas is only a week away. It’s such a wonderful time of the year for most of us, but for many men and women in our care it can be a very lonely time. For many, Christmas is just another day. At Shepherds of Good Hope, we believe everyone deserves a merry Christmas and we know we can do it with your help.

On Christmas Eve, we’ll serve up hot chocolate, treats and Christmas carols after we hold our annual Christmas mass in the parking lot at 5 p.m. With barrels serving as bonfires, everyone has a chance to stay warm. There will also be home-baked goodies in the Soup Kitchen.

Christmas Eve is also a magical time because we give out gifts to everyone staying in the shelter. And on Christmas Day, we serve a traditional hot turkey dinner to everyone. Volunteers and staff have done a great job of decorating the hallways and we have several Christmas trees throughout the shelter. In our supporitve living homes, Christmas music is playing in the common areas and trees are beautifully adorned.

You are the reason we can make Christmas so special for men and women who have so little but need so much. Thank you for helping us create a Christmas they can enjoy. Thank you on behalf of those with such a small voice and such a large need.

On behalf of Deirdre Freiheit, myself and everyone at Shepherds of Good Hope, we would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year.

Tereza is home for the holidays

Tereza is just like most of you at Christmas. She looks forward to good food and spending time with close friends.

It wasn’t always like that for Tereza. For years she lived in a dangerous neighbourhood. She suffereed from mental health challenges and life was very uncertain. She was an impoverished, single woman who ended up at the women’s shelter, spending more than a year there because she had nowhere else to turn.

With your support, Shepherds of Good Hope was able to find a forever home for Tereza. Ten years ago, we opened up 208 St. Andrew, a supportive living facility in the Byward Market. Tereza has been there with us from the start. Tereza is able to live with dignity and independence because of the 24/7 support we provide to the residents at 208 St. Andrew.

You helped Tereza get her own home where she can cook, spend time with friends, participate in activities such as cooking classes, bingo, yoga, a reading club and much more.

Today, Tereza knows peace and comfort. She feels safe in her home and her neighbourhood. But more importantly, she is part of a community. She is no longer vulnerable. She has meaningful friendships that have grown over the years.

Your support has allowed us to ensure all the men and women like Tereza are not alone during the Christmas holidays. We reach out to the most vulnerable men and women because they need us more than ever at this special time of year. Click here to help people like Tereza.

The joy of monthly giving
Jean had a personal connection to Shepherds of Good Hope when she found her brother had been in our care. That care inspired her to support Shepherds of Good Hope every month by signing up for our Monthly Giving Program. She says it feels right to be connected to Shepherds of Good Hope on an ongoing basis, like being part of our family who took care of her family. Jean says monthly donations are not a burden. She picked the amount and finds it easy and convenient. She knows her monthly donation helps other people just like her brother.

There are many people in this city who have a family member who is struggling and needs help. If you would like to join the Friends of the Shepherds Monthly Giving Program, click here or contact Micah at 613-789-8210, ext. 241 or at

Tribute gifts for Christmas

The malls are crowded. Your days are swamped and you still haven’t finished your Christmas shopping. Look no further than Shepherds of Good Hope. You can make a tribute gift in the name of a loved one and send him or her an e-card. Tributes and e-cards aren’t just for Christmas, though. They’re perfect for any special occasion such as birthdays, anniversaries and graduations.

We can also set up a donation page for you on our website that your friends and family can access through an email. It makes giving so easy.

If you want to honour someone with a tribute gift and to send an e-card, click here. To set up a personal donation page, please contact Jason at 613-789-8210, ext. 225 or at

Legacy, A Gift That Lives On

Few things in life are certain, however, we do know with certainty we will not live forever. But we can do something special to ensure our hopes and dreams live on. You can continue to help Ottawa’s homeless men and women for years to come by leaving a donation in your will to Shepherds of Good Hope.

By leaving a legacy gift to the Shepherds of Good Hope you can help change the future for Ottawa’s most vulnerable men and women. By caring for those in need, your spirit lives on in the deeds of others and the lives they change.

For more information on how you can easily make a legacy, gift please contact Micah at or 613-789-8210, ext. 241.
