Jeff’s New Beginning

Jeff had been in a tumultuous relationship, struggled with substance abuse and had spent some time in a detention centre.  He was released after serving his time and made his way to Shepherds of Good Hope.  After 10 nights spent in the shelter staff were really learning what makes Jeff tick and he was convinced to join Shepherds of Good Hope Worker Dorm Program.

Jeff first found work assembling furniture. He worked out a plan with our Case Management staff to focus on his destructive behaviours brought on by his addiction. He also planned to maintain full time employment in future. With much talk and moral support, Jeff found a Concurrent Disorder Group he was comfortable with.

Good things were happening to Jeff. He made a concerted effort to put money aside with a Shepherds of Good Hope Savings Program and worked hard to learn good budgeting skills. He also connected with medical professionals to address some health concerns that had plagued him for years.  At that time, work slowed down and so Jeff decided to complete his Ontario Secondary School Diploma requirements.

Work resumed and within time, Jeff saved up enough money to find more permanent housing and left shelter life. He now resides with friends he has made in the Concurrent Disorder Group.  His friends take their sobriety very seriously and have been sober for years.  Jeff is grateful that Shepherds of Good Hope had offered a Worker Dorm Program for him to participate in. It provided him with his own space that he knew he could come and go freely in. He was able to learn to budget and save enough money for first and last month’s rent for more permanent housing. Jeff also appreciated the encouragement and support that the staff so generously provided when he thought he could not make it.

Jeff sounds quite confident about his future and his outlook is very positive.  He plans to make the most of what his new chance in life has given him.

Jeff has turned his life around because we offered him what he needed when he was at rock bottom.  You too, can help people like Jeff realize that there is a better life out there for them.  If you would like to help people like Jeff turn their lives around click here.

Meet One of Our Monthly Donors

Sybil had been a regular donor to Shepherds of Good Hope for years but when her son became a monthly donor to Shepherds of Good Hope she wondered why she had not thought of that before.  Her son explained to her that it was much more convenient to have the money come right out of her bank account each month and she would not have to remember to write a cheque or go on line to make a donation and the monthly donation was not something that would make a big dent in her bank account.  Now Sybil supports Shepherds of Good Hope every month and never even notices it being taken out of her account and best of all, she is continuing to support Shepherds of Good Hope all year round.

Legacy, A Gift That Will Live On

Few things in life are certain, however we do know with certainty that we will not live forever. And while we can’t prevent this, we can make sure that our hopes and dreams live on. By leaving a legacy gift to the Shepherds of Good Hope you can help change the future for Ottawa’s most vulnerable men and women. By caring for those in need, your spirit lives on in the deeds of others and the lives that they change. For more information on how you can easily make a legacy gift please contact Micah Garten at mgarten@shepherdsofgoodhope.com or 613-789-8210 x241.

Anna’s Thoughts

It’s November and we are all starting to bundle up.  Yes, the early winter air is coming in and with that the season of shorter days and longer nights. At Shepherds of Good we are ramping up for the onslaught of chilly temperatures.

Winter time for some people can be a time of great struggle.  Our men’s and women’s shelters are running at full capacity all of the time.  Now that the colder months have come, we are getting into an overflow position where we must put mats on the floors in the hallways to accommodate all that need to come in from the cold.

Some families must decide whether they can afford to pay their heating costs or their grocery bills.  The need for groceries in our Grocery Program at this time of year is almost double that of any other time of the year.  More families are showing up looking for help to stretch their food rations and it isn’t extravagant foodstuffs they are looking for. It is the staples of life.

We are able to help ease the suffering that cold weather can bring because you have been there to help us.  You are our partners and together we are easing the burden of winter for the most vulnerable men and women amongst us.
