Shepherds of Good Hope

September 2013
Anna’s Thoughts
I am pleased to share some exciting news with you. It is the launch of the Tree of Hope Campaign.  This campaign when completed will give our newest location at 145 Castlefrank Road in Kanata — Hope Living — a complete $500,000 updating.
The funds raised will be used to replace the expansive roof, upgrade windows and doors, replace carpet, provide new paint and refresh common areas.  The Campaign kicked off with a generous donation of $50,000 in memory of a friend of Shepherds of Good Hope, William F. Burrows.  Right now our tree in the front foyer has 26 leaves on it. We are hoping to fill the tree with 180 leaves. You can show your support and be a part of Hope Living by purchasing a leaf with your name on it for $2500 where it will be placed in the tree for all to see.

If you would like to purchase a leaf click here.

It is an ambitious campaign but one that I know we can achieve because it is a necessity.  Our generous donors all know and understand how important having a clean, safe, warm place to call home is.

My second bit of wonderful news involves a special partnership with CBC Radio. Last December CBC hosted a Holiday Charity Drive called “We are More Than a Soup Kitchen” in support of Shepherds of Good Hope. Together, we managed to raise over $83,000 for the poor and homeless in this city.  Well, they have graciously accepted us for a second year to join them in raising funds for the marginalized. We learned the important news at our AGM on September 18th when CBC made the announcement to all in attendance.  We are extremely excited to be working with CBC again this year!

As always, if you have any questions about our organization, the work we do or a tour of our facilities please call me directly at (613) 789-8210 #247 or email me at asilverman@shepherdsofgoodhope.com.

Meet One of Our Monthly Donors
John (real name withheld) is a very grateful monthly donor. He told us the reason he gives to us is because approximately 15 years ago he needed help on many levels and the Ottawa General Hospital referred him to Shepherds of Good Hope.  He said he stayed in the Emergency Men’s Shelter for 6 months and then moved to our Hope Community where he remained another year.  He then with our help was able to launch out into the community. But he never forgot the kindness he received in our care and each month he provides Shepherds of Good Hope with a donation in memory of that time. He says,  I help the people that helped me so that they can help others. I am now in a position to give back and I know exactly where my money is going.

By joining our Friends of Shepherds Monthly Giving Program you are helping to ensure the delivery of our life saving programs every day.  Click here or call Christelle at (613) 789-8210 #225.

Olivier F was a student, had full-time employment and was a volunteer math tutor.  He had just finished his studies in the Police Foundation at la Cite Collegiale and was saving his money to enroll at Ottawa University in Criminology Studies when he learned that his mother was gravely ill.  Olivier used all his savings to get to his ailing mother in Cameroon and pay for her medical support while he was there. Upon return to Canada, it was no surprise for Olivier to have lost his housing and he subsequently came to Shepherds of Good Hope in February of 2011.Olivier eventually joined the Worker Dorm Program in September of 2011.  With the support of the case manager and housing worker, Olivier was able to build up his savings, budget for his plan to return to school and acquire a driver’s license, so essential to achieving his goal of joining the Police Force. Benefited by the stabilization of the Worker Dorm Program, Olivier was able to quickly re-start himself.  The housing manager was also successful in helping Olivier to find housing and connecting him with Ottawa Furniture Bank to secure essential items in this new housing. Olivier was last living at shelter in Jan 15, 2012.  He has since called back the case manager back several times to express his gratitude.

We are thankful that we can help Oliver and the many others that come to us daily.  With your assistance we can continue to reach out and improve lives.
