Anna’s Thoughts

This is always the time of year when life gets a little more hectic. Some of you are shopping for Christmas gifts. Others have holiday parties to attend. You’re likely making plans to spend time with family members soon. There’s a lot to do as we all get ready for the end of the year.

Life at Shepherds of Good Hope also gets busier at this time of the year. With the cold weather here for the next several months, more men and women will stay with us each night as a way to escape the cold. Our soup kitchen will be busy serving three hot meals a day. There will be more people looking for proper winter clothing, a hot meal and a warm bed. More families will visit our grocery program as they cope with buying food versus paying for heat.

Your donation helps us ensure no one is turned away, no one goes without. We need your help at this time of year because the need is great. We need your help because there are 1,600 men and women who rely on us every day. Please help.

James finds a community at The Oaks

For James and his sister, The Oaks is a family affair.

The Oaks is a supportive living facility that houses our managed alcohol program. James says his sister’s health has improved tremendously since his sister moved there.

It’s also where James likes to spend most of his days. Although James recently moved into his own apartment near The Oaks, he still likes to visit every day to check up on his sister and spend time with his friends. At The Oaks, the men and women have created their own community.

James is a quiet man of few words. He spent many years in the shelter overcoming his addiction to alcohol. He, too, went through the managed alcohol program at the shelter. James now has the skills and confidence to stay healthy and monitor his own alcohol intake. He says without Shepherds of Good Hope, he would still be living in the shelter.

It took small steps but eventually we stabilized James’ health and he learned the skills necessary to live on his own. Without your support, we could not have provided James with the care he needed to escape the shelter life. Without your donation, James might still be living in the shelter. Please help because more men like James need you.

You can help every 30 days

When you commit to making a monthly donation by becoming a Friends of Shepherds of Good Hope member, you help us ensure no one is turned away. A monthly donation means we can help more people like James.

Your donation helps the 1,600 men and women we care for every day. It helps support the numerous programs and services we offer to Ottawa’s homeless population.

Did you know when you become a monthly donor you help us serve 700,000 meals a year? That’s just one of the many things you accomplish when you sign up to be a monthly donor.

With a monthly donation, you pick the amount you want to give and when it happens. It’s that simple. If you would like to join our monthly giving program, click here or contact Micah (613) 789-8210, ext. 241 or

Create your own donation page

Every day we hear more stories about young people who tell their families they don’t want any gifts for their birthday. Instead, they want to help out people who are less fortunate than they are.

Thanks to our Tribute Gift program, that’s a lot easier to do. Tribute gifts are a great way to honour one person while making a gift that helps someone else who has so little.

Not only can you send a gift in someone’s name, but you can also send an e-card to the person you are making the tribute to.

We can also set up a donation page for you on our website that your friends and family can access through email. It makes giving so easy.

Shepherds of Good Hope creates Legacy of Hope Wall

Few things in life are certain; however, we know with certainty we won’t live forever. But we can ensure we still do our part to help those people who need us every day.

By leaving a gift in your will to Shepherds of Good Hope, you can help change the future for Ottawa’s most vulnerable men and women. By caring for those in need, your spirit lives on in the deeds of others and the lives they change.

This winter, we will be unveiling our Legacy of Hope Wall to honour those people who have left us a gift in their will to help us continue serving Ottawa’s most vulnerable men and women. We’re also honouring those people who have made a commitment to leave us a gift in their wills. Those names will be installed on the wall as a permanent reminder of their generosity.

Leaving a legacy gift is easy. If you would like more information about our legacy giving program, please contact Micah Garten at or 613-789-8210, ext. 241.
